Waverley Abbey and the Dissolution of the Monasteries
Access the audio of this trip in the Vobes Vault. Information at the bottom of the page
Mr. Pegram and I took a trip to Waverley Abbey, near Godalming in Surrey to have a look at the magnificent ruins there. It was distoryed as part of Henry the 8ths Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. Although a lot has diappeared now and much of the masonary has been purloined for local houses, what is left shows the excellent building skills of the architechs 900 years ago.
There is a certain calm and growing sense of awe as you walk around the abbey. There were about 70 Cistercian monks living here and 120 lay brothers in 1187.King John visited in 1209 and so did Henry III in 1225 and The Vobes in 2009!
There is more audio trips and investigations in the Vobes vault for you to enjoy. Subscript now for only £2 a month!
